La Cámara de Diputados del Congreso chileno aprobó hoy el proyecto de reducir la jornada laboral en el país sureño de 45 a 40 horas semanales. La iniciativa ahora continuará su proceso legislativo en la Comisión de Trabajo antes de pasar al Senado.

El proyecto recibió el respaldo de 88 parlamentarios en la Cámara Baja, mientras que 24 votaron en contra y hubo 27 abstenciones.

La iniciativa, impulsada en el 2017 por la diputada del Partido Comunista de Chile Camila Vallejo, se empezó a discutir en el Congreso en las últimas semanas, abriendo un encendido debate entre defensores y detractores de la propuesta.

Desde el oficialismo, el presidente Sebastián Piñera había respondido con su propia propuesta que pasaba por rebajar las 45 horas laborales a 41 de promedio. A diferencia de la iniciativa de Vallejo, que establecía las 40 como máximo, el mandatario mantenía la jornada mensual de 180 horas y colocaba la flexibilidad laboral (pactada con el empleador) al centro de la reforma.

Chile tiene la quinta jornada laboral más extensa de los países miembros de la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico (OCDE) –sólo por detrás de México, Costa Rica, Corea del Sur y Grecia, y al mismo nivel que Rusia– y los chilenos y chilenas trabajan 200 horas más que el promedio de los países miembros del organismo.
